McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo has said he’s given some thoughts to exploring other avenues to prepare for life after Formula 1.

The Australian is likely to be closer to the end of his career than to the start of it, having joined the F1 field more than a decade ago.

With Ricciardo struggling for pace and form at McLaren as rumours swirl about his immediate future in the sport, he opened up about what might come after his time in the sport comes to an end.

He revealed that he is interested in exploring a few potential areas to see what piques his interest outside of racing.

“I haven’t thought that far… I have thought about ‘what am I going to do in retirement one day?’, because it’s all I’ve done my whole life,” Ricciardo said at the launch of the McLaren Turbo Series on Partypoker.

“So, for sure, like I’ve had the thoughts of ‘what will I do?’, but, I guess, haven’t put in a lot of thought of ‘this is the direction I’m gonna go, this is what I’m going to do’.

“For sure, I’m definitely open to dipping into some things. I think it’s a good time to start trialing some stuff and figuring out what I enjoy.

“I call them positive distractions, so things outside of F1, which keep me positively ticking over and going to bed at night with the thoughts of something else other than racecars.”

Ricciardo was recently announced as being an executive producer for a new Disney-backed F1 series for Hulu, with the 33-year-old explaining it’s an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

“The Hulu thing is cool,” he explained.

“It was an opportunity that came up and it was, once I got to understand who was behind it and the people on board, then I was like ‘OK, this is going to be kind of cool’.

“So it’s going to be like basically a fictional TV series about Formula 1. And I’ll be lending advice and, again, to try and make it fun and cool.

“Because it will be fiction, but to make sure that it’s still in line with maybe what actually happens in the sport. I think, as well, I never thought that driving a racecar would lead to some of these opportunities. I call them pinch me moments. I have the attitude of ‘why not? like it’s a cool opportunity. So why not sprinkle a bit of magic?””
