Better results and Mick Schumacher too would have the upgrade

With only Kevin Magnussen racing the upgraded Haas in Hungary, Ralf Schumacher says his nephew Mick “should have delivered better results beforehand”.

Haas arrived at the Hungaroring circuit with updates for their VF-22, and a lot of them.

The Ferrari-powered team has new sidepods, floor, bodywork and rear brake ducts. They have also redesigned the car’s rear suspension.

The only problem is they only have enough parts for one car, Magnussen’s.

Team boss Guenther Steiner made it clear that Schumacher’s early season crashes, Jeddah and Monaco, had cost Haas time and money.

And as he was the one who crashed, he’s the one who misses out. He also has fewer points, 12 to 22, than his team-mate Magnussen.

“It’s common practice and it was the same with other teams in the past,” Ralf told Sky Germany. “Mick should have delivered better results beforehand.”

The 23-year-old, though, is not disheartened at all especially as the old-spec VF-22 has been scoring points in recent races.

Schumacher broke his duck at the British Grand Prix and followed that up with another top-ten at the Austrian Grand Prix.

“Our car is capable of scoring points, especially here you just need that one good lap in qualy and the chance of you being high up in the points are there.

“So we’ll take it as it comes, have a clean weekend and a good qualifying session and a strong race.”

He does, however, expect to have the upgraded package at the first race after the summer break, the Belgian Grand Prix.

“I think we are confident to get the second package for Spa,” he added to the official F1 website.

In a season that has seen several highs and lows for the German, Schumacher cited Austria as his best as he brought his car home in sixth place.

But both highs and lows, he says, are learning experiences.

“As far as the less good moments are concerned: I tick them off as lessons,” he said to F1-Insider, “because you only get stronger through experience.

“So I also see races in which things didn’t go so well as valuable.”
