The 2022 NHRA Camping World Series provided fans with an amazing season of racing. Brittany Force, Ron Capps, Matt Smith, and Erica Enders all fought hard to earn their respective world championships. There were also some genuinely wild moments this year at NHRA national events, including spectacular explosions and harrowing crashes. Thankfully, all of the drivers were able to walk away from these incidents.
Bobby Bode might not be old enough to legally drink, but he can drive the tires off a nitro Funny Car. During the NHRA SpringNationals at Houston Raceway Park, Bode and his team turned on enough win lights to earn a spot in the final round against NHRA superstar Matt Hagan.
Bode rolled into the final round ready to throw everything he had at Hagan, and it looked like he was on his way to picking up the win when disaster struck. As Bode was streaking towards the stripe, the engine decided to participate in an unplanned high-energy disassembly. It was Bode’s first big boomer and he wasn’t happy that he lost the round, throwing his helmet in frustration.
It’s rare to see an NHRA Pro Stock car make the wild ride highlights reel at the end of a season, but Erica Enders found a way to make it happen. Enders absolutely bulldozed the Pro Stock field in 2022 with multiple wins and final-round appearances. The Thunder Valley Nationals was one of the few times Enders didn’t win, but she literally drove over the crank trying.
Enders squared off against Elite Motorsports teammate Aaron Stanfield in what should have been another epic battle. However, Stanfield shook the tires and it appeared Enders was going to motor away for an easy win until things went south. Enders’ Camaro turned into a rolling smoke-show after the engine let go, and Stanfield was able to drive around her for the victory.
Doug Gordon had a magical season that was capped off with a Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Funny Car national championship. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all sunshine and win lights for Gordon in 2022. At the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, Gordon demolished his Funny Car in a horrific high-speed crash.
Gordon had just ripped off a 5.56-second run in a losing effort to Shane Westerfield when things went wrong. Gordon’s Funny Car made a violent move to the left and crossed the track at a high rate of speed. The Funny Car made hard contact with the wall right behind Westerfield….
