McLaren face a steep hike in their entry fee to compete in the next Formula 1 season due to their constructors’ championship victory this year.
The FIA levies a fee on all teams to enter each season based on their finishing position and points scores in the previous year.
The first-placed team is charged a higher rate per point than the other nine. McLaren therefore face a bill of $6,115,429 (£4.8m) to enter the 2025 world championship.
The team did not finish in the top three of the constructors’ standings for the three preceding years. Their entry fee for next year is therefore almost as much as they paid over the last three seasons combined ($6,406,868, £5m).

However as McLaren’s championship-winning total of 666 points is almost 200 less than last year’s winners Red Bull achieved, their subsequent entry fee is not as high. Despite annual increases in the FIA’s rates, McLaren’s fee is far below the $7,445,817 (£5.8m) Red Bull paid to enter this season.
Nonetheless, McLaren will pay more to enter next year’s championship than Aston Martin, Alpine, Haas, RB, Williams and Sauber combined.
Red Bull fell to third in the championship this year so their entry fee for next season has dropped by more than a third to $4,684,814 (£3.6m). This is by far the biggest year-on-year decrease of any team, though Aston Martin also sees a seven-figure fall in its fee, having scored just 94 points compared to their 280 last season.
The FIA will raise $25,787,663 from teams’ entry fees for 2025, almost $2m more than last year, which is a 37% rise compared to five years ago. However teams earn significantly more in terms of prize money from Formula One Management: in the first quarter of this year, when three races were held, they shared $163m (£130m) between them.
NB. RB was AlphaTauri until 2023, Sauber was Alfa Romeo until 2023, Alpine was Renault until 2020
