Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1’s new challenger, the W13, began its road to championship contention with a shakedown at Silverstone on Friday.
Throughout its history in Formula One, the German squad has achieved great success adapting to new regulations, becoming an eight-time constructors’ champion since its return to F1 as a works team in 2014.
Team Principal & CEO Toto Wolff recalls: “We did pretty well during the last big regulatory change into the hybrid era [2014] and performed well when we went from the narrow to the wide cars in 2017.”
The major technical regulations in place from 2022 onwards, aiming to promote closer racing, are a challenge faced by all teams ahead of the start of the new season.
In that regard, Mike Elliott, Mercedes-AMG F1 Technical Director, stressed: “In the aerodynamic world, normally, you are chasing after little bits and pieces, but with such, big regulation changes, the gains have been coming in big chunks which is quite satisfying.”
