The FIA has decided not to ban Russian drivers from motorsport in the wake of the country’s military invasion of Ukraine, allowing Haas driver Nikita Mazepin to remain in Formula One.
Motor racing’s governing body decided Tuesday that a ban would only extend to drivers competing under the flag of Russia or Belarus, but that drivers from both countries will be allowed to continue to race under a neutral “FIA flag”.
The meeting was organised after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a statement recommending governing bodies within sport not allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international sporting events. However, the IOC statement acknowledged that if that was not possible for “organisational or legal reasons”, athletes should not be allowed to compete under the name of Russia or Belarus.
