Jason Plato to retire from BTCC after 2022 season

Plato has started more than 600 BTCC races and has a record 97 victories. He tested a BTC Honda Civic at Donington Park last month and has now joined the squad that took six wins last season, to drive alongside Josh Cook and Jade Edwards.

The 54-year-old, who took his titles in 2001 and 2010, has also announced that this will be his last season in the BTCC, in which he made his debut driving a Super Touring Renault Laguna in 1997.

“I didn’t want to just drift out of the BTCC without signing off properly,” said Plato, whose most recent series win came at the end of 2019. “I need to be in a competitive car and team.

“The opportunity came very late with [team owner] Steve Dudman but, once we talked, we came to an agreement quickly. I liked his style and what I heard. Having jumped in the car and been to the factory it’s a really good team and there are great people there.”
