The Volkswagen group has given provisional approval to both Audi and Porsche to enter Formula One as separate engine development programs. The expectation is that Porsche will become a technology partner with Red Bull to work jointly on Red Bull Powertrains. Audi will operate its own separate engine development program. Audi’s attempted buyout of McLaren seems to have fallen through, and so Audi will simply operate a power unit provider program with the most likely candidate for their first customer team being Sauber Motorsport.
The approval is conditional on the finalization of the 2026 regulations on power units for which the Volkswagen group has two main conditions. First, the fuel used for the internal combustion engines must be 100% sustainable.
