Haas team principal Guenther Steiner says Mick Schumacher needs to have a “perfect weekend” to get himself off the mark in Formula 1.
Team-mate Kevin Magnussen has already scored 15 points upon his return to F1, while Schumacher has been unable to break into the top 10 and score his first points in motorsport’s top tier.
The Haas team boss is confident the 23-year-old German is not far off his team-mate but due to the tightness of the battle in the midfield, everything will need to come together for him at the right time to break his duck.
When put to Steiner by The Race that Schumacher is on the pace but missing an all-round performance over a weekend, he said: “You’re right – if you miss a little bit, you’re out of the points at the moment because the midfield is very, very close together.
“We had Kevin in the points in all of the races except one. So I think Mick will get there.

“But he needs a perfect weekend, otherwise you’re not ending up in the points this year because the competition is so intense in the midfield.
“Once he scores his first points, normally things get easier because you have overcome a hurdle. And it motivates you to get on to better things.”
Steiner refuted thoughts that Schumacher is struggling mentally as a result of his point-less start, but having an experienced team-mate such as Magnussen has made things “a little bit easier because you have got a reference” having dominated against Nikita Mazepin last season.
Magnussen himself maintains Schumacher “is going to do well” in 2022 and is happy with how the dynamic has been working between the two of them as they work together this year.
“It’s very relaxed, Mick is a nice guy. He knows what he’s doing,” said Magnussen.
