Carlos Sainz believes he has a “real opportunity” to win his home race, the Spanish Grand Prix, and that’s a first for the Ferrari driver.

This season Sainz has one of the best cars on the grid, and it could be even better come Barcelona as Ferrari are set to introduce a raft of upgrades.

Having lost out to Red Bull the past two races, the Scuderia believe their first big update of the season will at the very least draw them level if not put them back in ascendancy.

As such Sainz returns home to Spain believing this could be his chance to win his home race.

“It’s a real opportunity to make a podium or win a race at home, it’s a unique feeling that I’m really looking forward to,” he told Motorsport.com.

“I’ve always noticed it, at home I’ve always done my best races, scoring points when I didn’t have a car to score points, and this year we have a car for a podium, we’re going to try to win and go for it.”

Sainz has scored in all seven Spanish GPs in his career, his best result a P6 at the 2020 race.

“I remember going to the grand prix in 2005 or 2006 and seeing the stands at full capacity when Alonso…
