Sergio Perez ‘can be too accepting’ of Red Bull’s orders says Alex Wurz

Sergio Perez has been told he is too accepting of Red Bull team orders after he ceded the race lead to Max Verstappen in Barcelona.

With his future in the sport a doubt, Perez signed with Red Bull at the end of the 2019 season but he must have known the role he was being offered.

Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravtiz said in the wake of the Spanish Grand Prix that Perez is probably the “last person on God’s green earth” who doesn’t know he’s Red Bull’s number two driver and while he did say they needed to talk, the Mexican seemed accepting of his team’s wishes in Spain.

However former F1 driver Alex Wurz has criticised Perez for his willingness to give up the lead to Verstappen, saying he was “too accepting” of team orders.

“He’s fully right to talk,” Wurz said on the F1 Nation podcast.

“I mean, he is mega team player and to an extent that, at some points, I think he’s actually too easy and accepting some of the orders. You need to be a bit edgy, you need to put your elbows out.

“He proved for the team already when he was fighting for the World Championship in Abu Dhabi for Max. [That was mega].

 

“But I felt it was right to raise the voice. He executed as the team asked him, but man, he came out with new tyres and then he had to help back, when actually the race was critical for him to use the new tyre for the fast lap times. And at this point, he had to stay back.

Wurz said he has been in that situation himself before as a driver and said it can make you “cranky.”

“So this is when you get cranky as a driver. And I’ve been in this situation, and it’s not cool, but give him credit he executed [it well].

“But rightly he asks for his rights as well, you know, and it’s good to see at the end of the day.

“Nevertheless, he had to accept the second position here behind Max.”

Perez himself said he found it “frustrating” but did go on to say it was a great weekend for Red Bull.
