Mick Schumacher reckons “10 centimetres” of track is what caused his horror crash at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Haas driver just that little bit too wide.
Still searching for his first F1 championship point, Schumacher was in 17th place when he crashed out of Sunday’s grand prix.
Chasing Zhou Guanyu through the Swimming Pool complex, he lost the rear of his Haas VF-22, speared into the Armco barrier and then hit the Tecpro on the other side of the track.
His VF-22’s rear was ripped off in the impact, the car and barrier broken but the driver thankfully okay.
“I’m feeling all right,” said the 23-year-old. “Obviously it’s very annoying.
“I think in terms of pace we were definitely there. It’s just a matter of keeping it on track and unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that.
“The pace felt strong and it felt like we were able to attack and push.
“We just ended up being a little too wide, which is maybe a matter of 10cm at the end, and that was enough to lose all grip you thought you had.
“And unfortunately the result is as it happened.”
Sunday’s result means Schumacher is now tied for sixth on the list of most F1 starts without a single point, the German up to 28.
Schumacher told Fox Sport he reckons 10 centimetres out meant he may have hit a damp patch left over from the earlier rain, and that was all it took.
“It felt super-weird,” he said. “From what I saw on the video, it just seemed like we were 10 centimetres further out. And that kind of triggered maybe a wet patch or whatever with the front wheel, which then translated into a rear-wheel slide.
“That’s where basically the rear came around. I tried to correct it and that’s why it went to the left.”
Schumacher’s crash, his second big one of this season after his Jeddah qualifying shunt, has come at a time when the German is being linked to a move to Aston Martin, said to be top of their list should Sebastian Vettel opt not to continue in F1.
