Mick Schumacher has revealed that “heavy bouncing” caused the water leak that curtailed his running in FP1 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The Haas driver, in need of a good result in Baku after his Monaco Grand Prix crashed earned his team boss’ ire, managed just three laps in Friday’s first practice.
The only up side for Schumacher is that his stoppage wasn’t the result of a driver error.
With water leaking from the right hand side of his VF-22, he was told to “stop the car, stop the car” with the rather dejected looking driver doing just that.
As for what caused the water leak, Schumacher says it was the extreme bounce that Haas suffered in Friday’s practice.
“It seems that the problem with the water leak came from the heavy bouncing that we suffered in the first lap, and it just wrecked the plan,” he said as per GPFans.
On a day in which Lewis Hamilton said he was a “bit sore” from the bouncing, Schumacher said it was the first time ever that he physically felt the effect of porpoising on his body.
“It’s the first time physically that I do feel the effect of it,” he said.
“It’s quite harsh on the body and also on the car, so it’s definitely something to think about for future events.”

The driver was back in the car for second practice where he was 19th fastest, only Nicholas Latifi was slower on the day.
3.2s off the pace, Schumacher was almost eight-tenths slower than his team-mate Kevin Magnussen.
“This track, in general, is quite light on tyres except for obviously the surface temperature being quite high,” he said.
“It will be interesting to analyse deeper, so we have a good overview for the race.”
Team boss Guenther Steiner says Haas were “lucky” not to suffer the same water leak with the other car.
