Sergio Perez has been forced to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix, following a technical problem on his Red Bull.
Red Bull’s efforts to extend their lead in the Constructors’ Championship has taken a hit, with Sergio Perez being forced to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix in the early stages of the race.
The Mexican driver, winner of last month’s Monaco Grand Prix, was running in 10th place and tackling McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo when he slowed to a crawl with an apparent gearbox or transmission-related failure.
Parking up at the side of the track, Perez scrambled clear of his stricken Red Bull as the race was neutralised under the Virtual Safety Car to allow for the car to be retrieved.
With some of the drivers, including race leader Max Verstappen, taking the opportunity to pit under the VSC, the race has since resumed with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in the lead ahead of Alpine’s Fernando Alonso.
