Charles Leclerc didn’t deserve ‘Drive of the Day’ at the Canadian Grand Prix. That should have gone to Lewis Hamilton, says Tom Coronel.
Leclerc and Hamilton started at opposite ends of the grid at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the Ferrari driver P19 and on the back row with Hamilton P4.
It was the Monégasque driver’s worst grid slot of the season, the result of engine penalties not performance, while for Hamilton it was his best.
Although Leclerc brought his Ferrari F1-75 home in fifth place, he was not able to make the gains that he had thought would be possible.
“The last part was nice but obviously the very first part I was stuck in a DRS train and I could not do anything,” he told Sky Sports.
As for Hamilton, he climbed one position but being back on the podium felt like a race win for the Briton.
“Obviously it’s different to a win but I think it feels as good as that in a sense,” he said. “I’ve had a fourth and a third and a bit of consistency is coming back finally, so I’m definitely grateful and I know we can do better and I can do more.”
While it was Leclerc who the fans voted as the ‘Driver of the Day’, Dutch racing driver Coronel feels Hamilton deserved that honour as there was nothing “special” about Leclerc in a Ferrari finishing fifth.

“For me, Lewis was the Driver of the Day,” he told Motorsport.com. “You can see that he is getting back on track and that he was handy and smart.
“You saw him really fight the car. I think that’s cool to see. You need a Formula 1 car move. You see that with Lewis.
“Of course he got out like a complaining old man in Baku, but he came out of the car so fit, fierce and young. I think that’s cool to see.
“But Leclerc? Come on. Fifth from the back. With that car he should have been third after Perez’s retirement. Done. He should have been further forward.
“I didn’t think it was very special.”
