Greg Biffle Survives Contact, Ties Career-Best SRX Finish At South Boston

A daring move from Marco Andretti wasn’t enough to derail Greg Biffle‘s Camping World SRX Series race at South Boston Speedway, as the driver of the No. 69 managed to hound eventual winner Tony Stewart until just before the checkered flag on Saturday (June 25) night.

Biffle and Andretti made significant contact as Stewart flashed under the flagstand to complete lap 60, the grandson of Mario spinning off turn 4. Stewart had just passed Andretti, as had Biffle, and Andretti subsequently crossed over to poke his nose under Biffle’s car.

It didn’t go well, and around went the No. 98 while Biffle retained his runner-up position.

“Oh, man, I don’t know what he was doing. He ran into our right front down the backstretch earlier. I don’t know. I don’t know what he was doing.”

Despite some pressure from Bobby Labonte late, Biffle held on to match his career-best finish in SRX competition, a second-place effort that came at Stafford Motor Speedway in the 2021 season opener.

“[…] Brakes were fading a little bit [in the closing laps],” Biffle told reporters on pit road after the race. “When I’d go to the brake and I’d get rear brake, I’d run up the hill. But I ran up the hill a few times trying to diamond the track and get a run at [Stewart.] I tried everything I could.”

Biffle was never able to make a huge run at Stewart for the win, just out of reach from using the bumper on the No. 14 as the race wound down.

“He just had a better – he took care of his stuff better than I did,” Biffle said of Stewart. “His tires were probably a little fresher. I had to race really hard with Bobby Labonte, some of those other guys.”

The earlier contact with Andretti was one of multiple fender-banging incidents that dotted the 100-lap feature. Other run-ins included Helio Castroneves and Paul Tracy, who tangled in one of the heats and Michael Waltrip and Ryan Hunter-Reay, who had repeated instances of contact under caution during the main event.

SRX returns to the track next weekend for race three of its six-event 2022 slate, which will be held at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut.
