Williams junior driver Logan Sargeant dominated the Formula 2 field during Formula 2 qualifying at Silverstone, taking his first pole in the series.

Relatively sunny conditions, compared to Formula 3’s overcast session earlier in the day, meant track temperatures started at 27.5C despite a lower air temperature of 17.5C.

Juri Vips set an early fast time, with a 1’39.371, Liam Lawson and Dennis Hauger within two tenths of him. Felipe Drugovich had an enormous slide through Vale that saw his first flying lap only deliver tenth in the order, as other drivers completed their early runs.

With nineteen minutes to go, Logan Sargeant took provisional pole by nearly four and a half tenths from Vips with a 1’38.946. Sargeant’s time looked virtually untouchable, no other driver coming close during initial runs and instead mostly choosing to pit for fresh tyres.

Jehan Daruvala stayed out, however, taking advantage of a clear track to set the second-best time of 1’39.115. Times quickly improved, though, when drivers came out for their final attempts.

Sargeant continued to set fastest laps, his time brought down to a 1’38.442 with six minutes to go in the session. He was able to best that by a hundredth on his next attempt, staying a tenth ahead Frederick Vesti.

David Beckmann, in for banned Amaury Cordeel at Van Amersfoort Racing, retired from the session during the final five minutes, his car stopping by the side of the track.

Drugovich struggled again with the final corners, spinning into Club on his final attempt and keeping himself away from the front row.

Sargeant was audibly furious with himself after his second run, calling his lap “terrible.” However, as the session time ticked down no driver seemed able to mount a challenge to Sargeant’s time, his competitors Vesti and Drugovich pulling into the pits behind him.

Vesti will join Sargeant on the front row of the feature race, title leader and current second-placed drivers Drugovich and Pourchaire behind them. Jehan Daruvala will be on pole for the partially-reversed-grid sprint race, with Enzo Fittpaldi sharing the front row with him.
