Front Row Motorsports’ Zane Smith was fastest overall in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice Friday morning (July 8) at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with a lap at 92.789 mph. For Smith, the fastest lap of the session came on his very last lap on-track.
Zane’s lap was .130 seconds faster than ThorSport Racing’s Ben Rhodes. Parker Kligerman was third fastest in his Tide/Food Country USA Chevrolet, followed by Grant Enfinger. Tyler Ankrum rounded out the top five.
Rackley W.A.R.’s Matt DiBenedetto was sixth in his Chevrolet, then John Hunter Nemechek and ThorSport teammates Ty Majeski and Christian Eckes. Connor Mosack was 10th fastest in the Bret Holmes Racing Chevrolet.
Other notables include Matt Crafton in 12th, Stewart Friesen 14th, Hailie Deegan 15th, Chandler Smith 18th and Justin Marks 30th.
With 50 minutes of practice on a track that the majority of the field have not raced at previously, teams ventured to get as much track time as possible. While no one ran 10 consecutive laps during the session, the most laps anyone ran in the session was 18 by Blaine Perkins. This is just short of the length of the first stage on Saturday.
Some of the teams turned in only minimal laps. Mason Filippi completed only one lap, nearly 12 seconds off of Smith’s pace in his G2G Racing Toyota.
The fact that this session was run in the dry will be critical for Saturday’s race. Qualifying, along with the ARCA Menards Series race scheduled for Friday afternoon, likely won’t be so nice.
Qualifying for Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 150 is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. ET Friday afternoon. The session will air live on FOX Sports 1. Scattered showers are in the weather forecast for much of the remainder of the day, so the session could be quite dicey.
