Coy Gibbs, the co-owner, vice chairman and chief operating officer of Joe Gibbs Racing, has passed away at the age of 49.
The news was reported via a statement tweeted by JGR Sunday (Nov. 6) afternoon prior to the NASCAR Cup Series’ championship race at Phoenix Raceway.
“It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night,” the statement read. “The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time.”

Gibbs was the son of JGR owner Joe Gibbs and father of Ty Gibbs, who clinched the 2022 Xfinity Series championship at Phoenix Raceway on Saturday (Nov. 5). He also competed in NASCAR for several years and served as an assistant coach for the then-Washington Redskins from 2004-2006.
Coy Gibbs made 97 starts across the Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series between 2000 and 2003, recording two top 10s in Xfinity competition and 21 in the Truck Series. His best finish in the latter division came at Texas Motor Speedway in 2002, where he finished second.
Ty Gibbs had filled in for the injured Kurt Busch in 23XI Racing’s No. 45-turned-23 entry since Pocono Raceway, having made 15 starts thus far. He was removed from the No. 23 for the final Cup race of the season and was replaced by Daniel Hemric.
