The NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team has re-signed its drivers’ line-up, Emma Gilmour and Tanner Foust, for the upcoming off-road, all-electric Extreme E Season 3, the British outfit confirmed on Thursday.
NEOM McLaren Extreme E entered its first season in the innovative, purpose-driven racing series in 2022 with New Zealander Emma Gilmour and American Tanner Foust at the wheel of the McLaren XE Odyssey 21 electric SUV.
Ian James, Managing Director, NEOM McLaren Electric Racing & Team Principal, NEOM McLaren Formula E Team, said: “It’s great to be able to announce Emma and Tanner as our Extreme E driver pairing for next season.
“They have shown their pace, dedication, and drive during the team’s debut season and have been two driving forces in the team’s learning and development during that period.”
“Next season, we are hoping to capitalize on the foundations we have put in place over the last year.
“Having Emma and Tanner remain with the team will prove invaluable as we will aim to stay on that upward trajectory as the NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team.”
Together, the experienced pairing captured the first podium for the Woking-based squad at the Energy X Prix, Season 2 fifth and final round, staged last month in Punta del Este, Uruguay.
The team crossed the finish line in second place on a sunny Sunday afternoon in which Gilmour made history, becoming the first female driver to score a podium for the iconic brand.
“I’ve had an incredible first season with McLaren in 2022. We’ve really grown as a team, and it was lovely to be rewarded with a podium finish in Uruguay!” she outlined.
“I’m excited to be staying with McLaren for 2023 and can’t wait to get stuck into some new races while educating our audiences about the damaging effects of climate change.”
In 2023, the Dunedin born-driver will set off her second season with the team as a full-time driver. Before joining McLaren, the 43-year-old acted as a reserve driver for Veloce Racing, standing in for British driver Jamie Chadwick, who missed two events of the inaugural season.
Gilmour’s career highlights include winning the prestigious FIA Women in Motorsport and QMMF Cross Country Selection in 2015.
Moreover, a year later, she became the first woman to win a round of the New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC) at the Rally of Canterbury event.
Furthermore, she went on the distance to finish runner-up in the NZRC over three consecutive years, competing wheel to wheel with a top field.
