Mitch Evans took victory in the Monaco Eprix ahead of Jaguar team mate Nick Cassidy after the team mates worked together to hold off the two DS Penskes.
Evans secured his first victory of the season ahead of his team mate, with Stoffel Vandoorne completing the podium in third.
Jaguar used Cassidy to hold up the chasing pack to allow team mate Evans to complete Attack Mode in the lead of the race before swapping positions and doing the same for Cassidy. The two team mates completed their Attack Mode running with over ten laps remaining in the race, successfully retaining the lead two positions in front of the DS Penske pair of Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne.
Cassidy in second place was instructed to hold position in the closing laps. However, a Safety Car on lap 25 reduced the race to a five lap sprint. None of the positions at the front of the field changed over those five laps, however, and Evans took the chequered flag to win for the first time since the first London race at the end of last season.
Cassidy was just under a second behind in second place, with Vandoorne taking the final podium place in third ahead of team mate Vergne. Pole winner Pascal Wehrlein finished fifth with Oliver Rowland sixth and Antonio Felix da Costa in seventh. Sacha Fenestraz, Maximilian Guenther and Norman Nato claimed the final points places in the top ten.
Edoardo Mortara crashed out at the entry of the Swimming Pool on lap four, becoming the race’s first retirement and prompting an early Safety Car. Nico Mueller also retired later on after contact with McLaren’s Jake Hughes at Rascasse, which Hughes was assessed a five-second time penalty for. Jake Dennis finished last on the road after suffering front wing damage in the middle phase of the race. McLaren’s Sam Bird was forced out of the race after injuring his wrist in a practice crash, with team reserve driver Taylor Barnard making his debut in the series and finishing 14th.
The result sees Wehrlein take the lead of the championship on 102 points, with Cassidy moving up to second. Dennis’s failure to score drops him to third on 89, one point ahead of Oliver Rowland in fourth. The next round will take place in Berlin with a double-header of races over Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of May.
