After a year away, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship returns to Detroit this week. Instead of Belle Isle Park, the teams will race on the new 1.65-mile downtown circuit near the Renaissance Center. There will be 21 teams doing battle on the tight circuit.
In the GTP class, there are 10 cars entered. There are no notable lineup changes from the last race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Porsche Penske Motorsport’s Dane Cameron and Felipe Nasr currently lead the points by 50 over Action Express Racing’s Jack Aitken and Pipo Derani. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande are third.
The GTP cars will be accompanied by the GTD Pro class. There will be 11 of them doing battle, an increase of two cars from Laguna Seca.
Much like Long Beach, this weekend is a split situation. GTD Pro did not compete in Long Beach. Here, GTD will not compete.
The setup has resulted in a couple of teams entering GTD Pro cars. One of those is Conquest Racing. They have changed the number of their Ferrari 296 GT3 from No. 34 to No. 35 for this weekend. Albert Costa will be in the Ferrari, while Manny Franco will sit out the weekend in favor of Daniel Serra.
In addition, VasserSullivan is also trotting out both of their cars this weekend. Unlike at Long Beach, there will be no change in driver lineup. GTD regulars Frankie Montecalvo and Parker Thompson will drive the renumbered No. 15 Lexus.
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear is scheduled to go green at 3:10 p.m. ET Saturday. The race will air live on USA Network starting at 3 p.m. ET.
