Shawn “Murder Nova” Ellington scored his second Street Outlaws No Prep Kings invitational victory of the season, and first in a points-paying race on the year, with a final round defeat of “Disco” Dean Karns at the Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Saturday evening.
Ellington, in his RamJack-sponsored Chevrolet Nova, defeated Kayla Morton in the opening bracket setting round on Friday night, and then began his march to the $30,000 winner’s payout Saturday by defeating Scott Taylor and Bobby Ducote, before a titanic, all-405 semifinal race with Ryan Martin.
Karns, for his part, played spoiler on the field, as he lost to Kye Kelley in the opening round, and only earned his way into Saturday’s main event by way of a lucky chip draw that inserted him back into the 16-car field. He didn’t waste the opportunity, defeating Jeff Lutz, James “Birman” Finney, and Robin Roberts to punch his ticket into the final.
Ellington won at Virginia earlier in the year, and his surging performance in 2024 — which also includes a second-chance race victory at the Flying H Motorsports Park in Missouri — has run his round record to an impressive 19-4, positioning him fourth in the points standings behind leader Giuseppe Gentile, Justin Swanstrom, and Roberts.
“I don’t think people realize what it takes to come here and get a win,” said Ellington in front of a packed Beech Bend Raceway Park crowd as he basked in the victory. “There’s all kinds of things that come into play. We’ve said it a bunch: everything has to go perfect for you to win one of these things, and only one thing has to go wrong for you to lose. So for us to string together that many runs and be that consistent, that’s what set out to do. When we swapped over from twin turbo to ProCharger, that’s what we had in mind was consistency. Turbos just can’t really seem to be consistent out here, so we made the swap, and that’s what we said we were going to do was be consistent. We’re not always the fastest on the property, but we made it happen today.”
The contingent from Oklahoma City has dominated Bowling Green, as Chuck Seitsinger, Martin, “Daddy Dave” Comstock, and now Murder Nova, have all won the venue’s No Prep Kings invitationals.
