You can’t deny that Doug Duell is a die-hard Mopar fan. The machines that Duell campaigns include a Nostalgia Super Stock Plymouth Fury wagon, A C/SA Barracuda, and a Super Stock DragPak Challenger. Duell also owns a 1968 Barracuda Hemi clone known as “Cool Fish” that’s powered by a GEN III HEMI and it’s one awesome Super Stocker.
The Cool Fish found its way into Duell’s collection around five years ago. Duell was on the hunt for a Super Stock Cuda rolling chassis and found this car. Fellow Super Stock racer Geoff Turk was selling the Cuda so he could go Factory Shootout racing. Duell made a deal with Turk and brought the car home.
“When I first got the car, we put a 5.7-liter GEN III HEMI in it. I was not crazy about that combo, so I sold that motor and put a 383 cubic-inch engine with a carb in it. I liked the combo, but you really had to run it at a very high rpm to make it go fast. It really became too much maintenance for me to run,” Duell says.
Well, Duell ended up buying the DragPak car from the Coughlin family and almost sold the Cool Fish. In the end, Duell just thought it was just too nice, so he decided to keep it. Duell wasn’t sure what combo he was going to put in the car, and had even kicked around running a Gen II Hemi. Jeff Taylor suggested that Duell try a 426 cubic-inch GEN III HEMI and he decided to go that route.
The mill that currently lives between Cool Fish’s fenders is a Jeff Taylor Performance-built 426 cubic-inch GEN III HEMI. On top of the engine, you’ll find a set of GEN III HEMI heads and a DragPak intake with a Wilson Manifolds throttle body. A Fuelab fuel system feeds the hungry HEMI a steady diet of race gas. Duell controls the engine with a Holley EFI system. Behind the HEMI, you’ll find a ProTrans transmission and ATI torque converter. The rear 4-link suspension and front suspension work with a set of AFCO shocks.
Duell is currently running the Cool Fish with a Stocker GEN III HEMI and its best pass has been 8.99 at 147 mph. The next step will be to move up to the Super Stock engine and run in the 8.70s.
