The new Formula 1 film created by the makers of Top Gun: Maverick will begin to arrive in cinemas on June 25th next year.
No title has been announced yet for the film, which is being made in collaboration with the world championship. Seven-times F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is a co-producer and said he wants the film to portray a greater degree of realism than past motorsport dramatisations.
Joseph Kosinski, whose previous films include Top Gun: Maverick and Tron Legacy, is directing the film. Jerry Bruckheimer, whose many film credits also include the successful recent Top Gun reboot, is its producer.
Filming began last year at several circuits and during some world championship events, beginning with last year’s British Grand Prix.
Work on the film was briefly disrupted in the second half of 2023 due to the strike called by the Writers Guild of America, but has since resumed. The production crew have continued filming this year and will do so again at next month’s British Grand Prix as well as other rounds between now and the season finale at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi.
Apple Original Films will release the film in partnership with Warner Bros Pictures. Following an “international” release on June 25th, the film will open in cinemas in North America two days later. It will also be screened in IMAX cinemas.
Brad Pitt, 60, will star as a former driver who returns to compete in Formula 1 with the fictional APXGP team. His rookie team mate is played by Damson Idris. Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia, Samson Kayo and Callie Cooke are also among the cast.
F1 said the film “will immerse audiences in the spectacle of the most popular annual sports series, celebrating the skill and heroism of the drivers while showcasing the incredible challenge of competition in Formula 1.”
