Williams hire swathe of staff from rivals including former Alpine technical director · RaceFans

Matt Harman, Alpine, Bahrain, 2024

Williams has announced six significant hires for their technical department, including Alpine’s former technical director.

Matt Harman, who left Alpine following their poor start to the season, will join Williams after the summer break as their new design director. He will be reunited with Pat Fry, Williams’ chief technical officer Pat Fry, who joined them from Alpine last year.

Williams says it has hired 26 new team members from rival teams so far this season, including 10 from Alpine, four from Red Bull and others from Mercedes and Ferrari.

Among its latest newcomers are Ferrari’s former head of performance analysis, Fabrice Moncade – previously of Mercedes – who will join as their chief engineer of computing science. The team also acquired a new chief aerodynamicist in Juan Molina, former principal aerodynamicist at Haas who worked with Red Bull during Sebastian Vettel’s championship-winning campaign.

Alpine’s former head of performance, Richard Frith, will also join Williams as their new head of performance systems, while Steve Winstanley, formerly of Red Bull, will take on the position of chief engineer for composites and structures. All five newly-announced members of the technical team will work under technical director Fry.

In addition, Williams also confirmed that Sorin Cheran, a former artificial intelligence specialist at HP, will join the team as their new chief information and analytics officer to work specifically on data processing within Williams.

Team principal James Vowles said the newly-announced hires were a key step towards his ambitions to bring Williams back into contention for world titles in the future.

“We are on a mission to fight our way back to the front and being able to attract experienced, championship-winning talent from other teams demonstrates huge belief in the journey we are on,” Vowles said. “Williams is investing in what it takes to win, and this is just the start as we prepare to welcome more new faces from across the grid in the months ahead.”
