Drivers will face a continuing risk of rain across all three days of the British Grand Prix weekend – but there is hope Sunday’s race may stay dry.

Despite it being the height of the British summer, it will be a cloudy, cool and likely wet weekend of racing.

Today’s opening day of practice has begun with the first on-track session of the weekend, the Formula 3 practice session, taking place on a wet track with temperatures sitting at 13 degrees – far lower than they would be during a typically dry day in July. Rain should stop by the time the first F1 practice begins at 12:30pm, while the second practice session should be slightly warmer but still likely dry.

Saturday is expected to be wetter than Friday, with a very high chance of rain for the F3 sprint race and F1’s final practice session, which begins just before midday. Conditions should remain cool for the F2 sprint race and then there will be just under a 50-50 chance of rain falling for the start of Formula 1 qualifying.

The rain is expected to continue on Sunday. The Formula 3 feature race is likely to escape with starting before the rain arrives, but the F2 drivers might not be so lucky when their feature race begins at 10am. A heavy rain shower is expected between the end of Formula 2 and the grand prix itself at 3pm, but there is still a threat of more rain falling through the race.

It could be that drivers will need wet or intermediate tyres for the early laps before the track begins to dry out, making the grand prix a test of drivers’ and teams’ reactivity.

If it does rain, this will be the first wet British Grand Prix since 2016, where Lewis Hamilton led home Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg in a wet-dry race.
