Ferrari’s technical director for the chassis area, Enrico Cardile, is leaving the team amid rumours he is heading to Aston Martin.
The team has not announced who will replace him. Team principal Frederic Vasseur will oversee the chassis area on an interim basis until a long-term replacement is identified.
Cardile is a longstanding member of the Scuderia who first worked with them while he was still at university. After joining the team’s sportscar racing division in 2005 he moved to the Formula 1 side in 2016, becoming its head of aerodynamic development.
His move coincided with an upswing in the team’s performance in the following years after F1 introduced new aerodynamic regulations. Sebastian Vettel led the 2017 and 2018 championships for Ferrari until mid-season, though the team were overhauled by Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton both times.
Cardile has held several different job titles since joining Ferrari’s F1 division. He took charge of the chassis area in 2021 and the team enjoyed another strong start when the regulations were revised again in 2022, Charles Leclerc vying with Max Verstappen for championship honours.
When Vasseur joined Ferrari last year he appointed Cardile to the roles of technical director for chassis and aerodynamics.
Ferrari has not confirmed Cardile’s destination, but rumours in recent weeks claimed Aston Martin was trying to secure its services. The team has already made several prominent hires from its rivals, including Dan Fallows from Red Bull as head of aerodynamics and and former Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell as Group CEO.
Aston Martin and Ferrari are also understood to be vying for the services of Red Bull star chief technical officer Adrian Newey, who will leave his current team at the beginning of next year, in time to begin work on a car for F1’s new 2026 regulations.
