McLaren pair will be “smart” after locking out front row of grid · F1 · RaceFans

Oscar Piastri, McLaren, Hungaroring, 2024

Oscar Piastri insists that he and McLaren team mate Lando Norris will prioritise their constructors’ championship campaign over their own personal ambitions on the run to turn one on Sunday.

Norris and Piastri secured McLaren’s first front row lock-out of a grand prix grid since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix when they beat Max Verstappen in qualifying for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

McLaren have led seven different grands prix during 2024 but only taken a single victory, in Miami. With the team achieving its second pole of the season, Norris says he is confident about his team’s chances of converting their starting position into victory on Sunday.

“We’ve come into this weekend, and the last few, happy and confident that we can do a good job and we have a good car to fight for pole. And that’s exactly what we did today,” said Norris. “So a great job by the team, we’ve been improving every weekend and to end up on pole today is sweet.

“We’re in the best position for whatever the conditions throw at us. I’m looking forward to it – two cars on the front row, we can control it from there. So as long as we stay where we are, we’ll be happy.”

Piastri will start behind his team mate, on the front row of the grid for the third time in his career.

“It’s the first one-two in qualifying for McLaren for a very long time, so very happy,” said Piastri.

“Obviously this afternoon in qualifying, it wasn’t easy. A lot of decisions on the fly. But to end up with both cars on the front row is an amazing result.”

At just over 500 metres, the run from the grid to the first corner at the Hungaroring is one of the longest on the calendar. Piastri is seeking his first victory in Formula 1, but says he will be sensible at the start.

“It’s a long run down to turn one, so everything is still to play for tomorrow and a lot of points are on the table,” he said.

“Of course I want to get into the lead, but we have both cars in the front row. We’ve got a big task ahead of us trying to win this championship as a team. And we’ll be smart. We’ve got a very quick car, it’s been working extremely well this weekend. We want to keep it one-two and…
