Wehrlein’s London win sets up thrilling three-way title showdown in finale · RaceFans

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche, London, Formula E, 2024

Pascal Wehrlein set up a thrilling three-way championship showdown for Sunday’s final race of the season by winning the first London EPrix.

The Porsche driver won an incident-filled first race of the weekend at the London ExCel arena to take a slim championship lead and force a close title decider between himself and the two Jaguar drivers, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy.

Starting from third, Wehrlein passed Evans to take the lead and remained ahead over the later laps to take the chequered flag first ahead of Evans. Maximilian Guenther had overtaken Evans to take second place, but he suddenly lost power in his Maserati after a late Safety Car restart which forced him into retirement and promoted Sebastien Buemi up to the podium in third.

The two Mahindras of Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara finished fourth and fifth, ahead of Nico Mueller. Nick Cassidy looked to be under threat of failing to score any points for the majority of the race before finishing ninth on the road, but was promoted up to seventh thanks to time penalties for Jake Dennis and Sacha Fenestraz ahead of him.

Sam Bird recovered from being caught behind Robin Frijns’ crashed Envision on the opening lap to score points in eighth, while Stoffel Vandoorne and Norman Nato scooped up the final points in ninth and tenth, respectively.

The dramatic race sees Wehrlein head into the climactic final race with a narrow three-point lead in the championship ahead of Evans, with Cassidy just seven points off the top of the table in third. Reigning champion Dennis, Antonio Felix da Costa, Oliver Rowland and Jean-Eric Vergne were all mathematically eliminated from contention with their results.
