F2 sprint race postponed due to extreme wet conditions at Spa · RaceFans

The Mercedes FIA Safety Car on track as the Formula 2 sprint race is postponed, Spa-Francorchamps, 2024

The Formula 2 sprint race has been postponed until a currently unconfirmed time due to unsafe weather conditions.

The first F2 race of the weekend was supposed to start at 2:15pm local time at Spa-Francorchamps ahead of F1’s qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix.

However, heavy rain which hit the final F1 practice session continued into the build up to the F2 sprint race, meaning the start was delayed.

After half an hour of delay, race control abandoned efforts to hold the race before the grand prix qualifying session. The race will now be held at 6:15pm local time.

Williams junior Zak O’Sullivan will start the race from pole position on the partially-reversed grid. Championship contender Paul Aron, who qualified tenth on Friday which would have given him sprint race pole position, dropped ten places due to a pair of five-place grid penalties incurred during last weekend’s round in Hungary.

Dennis Hauger is set to begin the race on the front row alongside the ART driver, with Richard Verschoor third.

It is the second time in the last three rounds that a junior Formula race has been rescheduled due to extreme wet conditions. The Formula 3 sprint race at Silverstone could not be held on its Saturday morning slot due to similarly unsafe conditions. It was rescheduled to the end of the day’s programme and ran in full.

Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar currently leads the championship with 140 points, 18 ahead of Aron. McLaren junior driver Gabriel Bortoleto lies third, with Sauber junior Zane Maloney in fourth.
