During the 1960s and 1970s, Fuel Altereds were the wildest thing you’d see on a drag strip. These unruly machines have short wheelbases, big engines, and were piloted by people with nerves of steel. Fuel Altereds are still popular today with fans thanks to their unpredictable nature. The NITRO CHAOS series highlights these rad rides, and sometimes they remind everyone just how wild they still are.
NITRO CHAOS is an awesome series that features pretty much anything that runs on nitromethane. The rules are simple: basically, anything with four wheels and a front-mounted nitro engine that runs on at least 80% nitro can come play. This series is practically made for Fuel Altereds and plenty show up and show out.
The NITRO CHAOS event at Mo-Kan Dragway was packed with spectators and the pits were filled with an awesome field of cars. Drivers don’t come to a NITRO CHAOS event to try and just make a few passes, they come to go fast and put on a show. Unfortunately, Donnie Massey and Anthony Whitfield experienced some unscheduled meetings with the Mo-Kan track barriers that led to some crazy rides.
Massey, who drives the “Showtime” Fuel Altered, had his hands full during the first round of qualifying. The Showtime machine lit the tires up almost right after Massey hit the gas, which caused it t make a big right turn just past the 60’ block. The car ended up striking the wall in the right lane, but thanks to Massey’s driving skills, the damage was minimal.
The ride that Whitfield took was far more terrifying and violent. Whitfield was on a blistering pass when his “Mighty Mouse” Fuel Altered drifted towards the center of the track. Before Whitfield could bring Mighty Mouse back into the groove, the car shot across his lane and smacked the wall just past the eighth-mile marker. The tremendous impact did significant damage to the guardrail, and demolished Whitfield’s car. Thankfully, Whitfield walked away from this scary crash.
