Alexander Albon confirmed Williams will bring more new parts for their car soon after using their latest update to secure his best grid position of the season.
He described the windy conditions in qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix as a “lottery” after taking eighth on the grid for Sunday’s race at Zandvoort. It is the fourth time this year he has reached Q3.
The Williams driver will start between the Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll after setting a personal best time in Q3 just under a second slower than Lando Norris’ pole-winning effort. Albon says he had to battle with high winds throughout the session.
“It’s been very windy, very gusty – I think in some weird ways,” Albon told the official F1 channel after qualifying.
“If you were ten or 20 seconds behind another car, they could have completely different wind to you. It’s not tenths, it’s halves of seconds that was in wind. I did all my laps feeling quite good. I knew it was tricky out there for my car, then the wind died for one lap and I went seven, eight tenths quicker. So it felt a little bit like a lottery, in some ways. You’d turn in to turn nine, turn ten every lap – totally different. Lando’s lap was pretty mighty – maybe he got no wind!”
Williams have brought a significant range of upgrades to their car for this weekend’s race, the first following the summer break. He described the new package as a “big step” for the team.

“We’ve done a good step with the weight as well – it’s not just aero, it’s another step of weight,” he explained.
“It’s not the complete package either, so hopefully we can get that coming in a few more races’ time. Obviously we went well here last year as well, so it is a bit of a track for us, but still very positive.”
However, Albon’s team mate, Logan Sargeant, will start at the very back of the grid on Sunday after a heavy crash in practice left his car too damaged to participate in qualifying. Sargeant admitted it had been “not an ideal day” for him and his team.
“I feel okay, which is most important,” he said. “A little bit sore, but I’m good to go for tomorrow.
“It’s my mistake, so I’ll take that. All we can do is look forward. I think we have a decent car this weekend, so we’ll see what conditions come up tomorrow, see what we can do.”
