Aston Martin could find room in its technical department for Adrian Newey if he decides to join them, says team principal Mike Krack.
The Silverstone-based team has made a series of high-profile appointments to its technical division since Lawrence Stroll’s consortium took it over six years ago. Dan Fallows arrived from Red Bull as its technical director two years ago and the team hired Ferrari’s Enrico Cardile to join as chief technical officer next year.
Newey confirmed earlier this year he will leave Red Bull, for which he designed a series of championship-winning cars, at the beginning of next year. Krack made it clear Aston Martin could find room for the star designer within its technical division if he chooses to join them.
“Formula 1 these days is so broad, it is not like you have to make huge changes,” said Krack. “I think there was a time where there was a team that had seven technical directors in the past, so I think we are very far from that.
“I think someone like that, you have to make any kind of effort to integrate and adjust your structure to get the best out of it.”
Krack said the progress made by Aston Martin under Stroll’s leadership is making it “a more and more attractive team” to join. “We have great infrastructure developing, so again, we are honoured to be put together with that name.”
Aston Martin moved into its newly-built and expanded facilities during last season. It is in the process of building a new, state-of-the-art wind tunnel and simulator, giving it access to facilities far in advance of those it has been using until now.
“When I joined, I went into the old brick house of the former Jordan factory,” said Krack, who took charge of the team at the beginning of 2022. “If you pass from the A43 into Silverstone, you see that this has massively changed.
“So from that point of view, it’s a completely different structure. It’s a different team. The headcount has almost doubled since.
“So I think this makes you per se not attractive, but this paired with the ambition and everything that goes into these buildings, I think makes us very attractive for the future.”
