Aston Martin is holding a press conference to make an announcement about its Formula 1 team. Watch live here:

The team has not given any official indication what it intends to announce. However for several weeks Aston Martin has been rumoured to have won the race to secure the services of star F1 designer Adrian Newey.

The 65-year-old announced in May he will leave Red Bull at the beginning of next year. Newey is widely regarded as the most talented designer working in F1 today and whoever secures his services for next year will gain the benefit of his decades of experience in the sport producing championship-winning cars for three different teams.

Newey came to prominence with the Leyton House March team in 1988 and was hired by Williams two years later. His designed for them won five constructors’ titles in six years between 1992 and 1997. He then joined McLaren, who took the title with the first of their cars he worked on, in 1998.

However Newey enjoyed his greatest success after sensationally signing to join Red Bull in 2005, their first year in the sport. In 2010 they won the first of four consecutive titles.

Although the team struggled in the early years of the V6 hybrid turbo era, Newey guided them back to winning ways from 2021, when Max Verstappen won the drivers’ title for them. They took title doubles in 2022 and 2023, and are leading this year’s championship.

Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen and Sebastian Vettel have also won the drivers’ title in cars designed by Newey.

Lawrence Stroll has poured investment into Aston Martin since he took over the team in 2018. They moved into a new, state-of-the-art factory last year and have hired a raft of top engineering talent from rival teams. If they have indeed signed Newey, it will be a significant statement of intent about their plans for 2026, when they will also begin a works engine deal with Honda.
