McLaren accepts “case closed” over Red Bull’s front bib device · F1 · RaceFans

Zak Brown, McLaren, Circuit of the Americas, 2024

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has accepted the FIA’s assurances over Red Bull’s use of its front bib adjustment device.

The FIA conducted a lengthy examination of Red Bull’s cockpit-mounted adjustment device, which is situated in the footwell of the RB20. In order to ensure the device is not used under parc ferme conditions, which would be a breach of the regulations, a seal is now being placed on it at those times.

Brown said he is satisfied that means the mechanism will not be used when it shouldn’t be. “I think it’s ‘case closed’ moving forward because I think they’ve addressed the issue with the seal,” he told the official F1 channel.

However he said the fact the seal was deemed necessary “doesn’t quite make sense,” as the device has been present for years without being covered at those times.

“Red Bull says you can’t adjust it from inside the cockpit when the car is fully dressed,” said Brown. “Then, kind of, why do you need a seal? So that still is a little uncomfortable for me.”

Brown reiterated his view that camera footage of the car in parc ferme should be scrutinised by the FIA to determine whether the device was ever used when it should not have been.

“I think some more due diligence needs to be done looking back so we can move on and have total confidence that it hasn’t been used, because if it’s been used, that’s a big violation in parc ferme. So I still have some unanswered questions I’d like some answers to.”

However the FIA’s single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis said yesterday it would not be possible to check whether the device had been used during parc ferme at past events.
