George Russell was frustrated to suffer his second heavy crash in the space of seven days during practice for the Mexican Grand Prix on Friday.
The Mercedes driver lost control of his car on the apex kerb in turn eight at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in the second practice session. His W15 snapped out of control and hit a TecPro barrier at high speed.
Russell was taken to the circuit’s medical centre for inspections and later released. “I definitely feel a bit winded after after that one,” he told the official F1 channel.
He was at a loss to explain the crash, which appeared to begin when his car started bouncing on the turn eight apex kerb.
“Honestly I don’t really know what happened,” said Russell. “The car just started bouncing on the ground and before I even had a chance to catch it, it was already spinning.”
His last crash occured just seven days ago when he spun out during qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix. “So there’s a lot of work for the guys tonight, again,” Russell continued.
“It just seems like it’s one thing after another at the moment. It’s frustrating.
“In FP1 we were really strong, really fast. I’ve taken the same line, cutting that corner and, for whatever reason, on this occasion, FP2, the thing just started going on me.”
One consolation for Russell was that most of today’s second session was given over to testing new Pirelli tyre compounds for 2025. His crash therefore cost him less representative running that it might ordinarily have done.
“FP2, because it was the Pirelli tyre test, it wasn’t hugely valuable in terms of what you learned going into the race weekend,” he said. “So I obviously missed out on on laps. FP3 is going to be important, I just hope we can get the car fixed.”
