LONDON, ENGLAND – November 1, 2024 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the consignment of a significant historic Formula 1 car to its Paris auction on 4-5 February 2025. The ex-Jacques Villeneuve 1998 Williams FW40 chassis FW20-03 is poised to be among the standout competition cars in the sale, which makes a return to the Salles du Carrousel in the Louvre Palace, in the heart of Paris’s ‘Golden Triangle’, for a third consecutive year. It follows the sale of another significant competition car at last year’s event, a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione that topped the sales charts achieving €10,158,125.
Offered directly from the collection of Williams Heritage, chassis FW20-03 played a pivotal role in the defense of Williams’ title that ultimately saw the team secure 3rd place in the 1998 Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship. During the 1998 season, chassis FW20-03 was raced in no fewer than three Formula 1 Grands Prix by reigning Drivers’ World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, the Canadian ace steering the car to 5th place in the season opener in Australia and 4th in San Marino the following month, in addition to qualifying 7th in the Argentine Grand Prix before retiring after tangling with the pole-setting McLaren-Mercedes of David Coulthard. It was later designated as a spare and test car for the remainder of the 1998 season, during which time it was driven by the likes of by Juan Pablo Montoya and Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
A fantastic racer from the golden era of modern Formula 1, chassis FW20-03 is offered with a ‘show’ Mecachrome V-10 engine. It is highly eligible for historic racing events and demonstrations and would form a worthy cornerstone of any motorsport or Formula 1-themed collection.
The car will be on display during the London auction at The Peninsula London on 1-2 November and will cross the block in Paris on 5 February 2025. Offered entirely without reserve, it is expected to fetch €200,000 – €300,000.
