Las Vegas Grand Prix Preview: A Racing Spectacle Under the Floodlights

Following an enthralling return to the Formula One calendar in 2023 after a 40-year absence, the Las Vegas Strip Circuit is ‘ready to rumble,’ serving as host for Round 22 of the 2024 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix kickstarts the first leg of the final triple-header of the season, a night race held on Saturday in the heart of the resort city on the famous Strip – otherwise known as the Las Vegas Boulevard.

The track, the second longest on the Formula One calendar, spans 3.8 miles (6.201km) long, with the cars running past iconic landmarks at an estimated top speed of over 217 mph (350 km/h) over 50 laps.

The anti-clockwise street circuit boasts three main straights, providing overtaking opportunities, particularly from turn 6 through 9, and encompassing 17 corners overall.

Moreover, due to its location in the Mojave desert and time of the year, the temperatures registered in the area at night are low, posing a challenge for tire warm-up and management.

According to Formula 1 official tire supplier Pirelli, the company has chosen the same three softest compounds as last year: the C3 Hard, C4 Medium, and the C5 Soft.

Upgrades for the temporary track’s second consecutive edition, the fourth overall, see a realignment on the walls on the right-hand side of the Pit Entry.

In addition, two crash gates in the Pit Wall have been relocated.

Red Bull Racing Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ world championship with 393, bidding to claim his fourth Formula One title this weekend on American soil.

McLaren F1 Team Lando Norris follows the Dutchman 68 points behind and still has mathematical chances to battle for a maiden title at the pinnacle of motorsport.

We’ll be under the lights in Las Vegas. Driving along the Strip is really cool, and I’m looking forward to racing there with the MCL38,” Norris said.

We’ve had a good car this year, and the field is incredibly strong, so I can’t wait to see what we can do at the weekend.”

Adding: “Everyone’s motivated and ready to give it our all in the fight for both Championships.”

McLaren holds the pole position in the Constructor’s championship with 593 points, followed closely by Scuderia Ferrari (557) and Red Bull (544) also in contention.
