NHRA Top Fuel Champ Antron Brown To Make Pro Modified Debut

Antron Brown has won in a dragster, he’s won with doors, and with nothing between he and the pavement but leathers on motorcycle. He’s stood on capital hill, and he’s stood on the NHRA world champion’s podium — four times. Now, the newly-minted Top Fuel world champion is adding Pro Modified to his decorated racing resume, as he eyes a debut at the upcoming Snowbird Outlaws Nationals at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida.

Brown will pilot friend Manny Buginga’s Lexus SC Pro Mod, dubbed “Jerome,” at the popular late-season heads-up drag racing affair. He also will compete in the U.S. Street Nationals, Jan. 24-26, and the World Series of Pro Mod, Feb. 27-March 1, also at Bradenton.

The Pro Mod venture will mark Brown’s second foray with Buginga; he notably won the Pro 275 category in Buginga’s “Fred” Mustang at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals in December 2022. The 80-time NHRA national event winner will be a certifiable contender in his debut, as the ProCharger-boosted Lexus will be set up by famed door-car tuner Steve Petty.

“We’ve been friends with Manny and the Buginga family for some time now and have raced with them in the past, so when Manny called and said I want you to drive our red Lexus RCF Pro Mod, it was an easy decision for me,” Antron Brown said. “It’s been a work in progress for some time and I really enjoy going to Bradenton during the off-season and doing some eighth-mile racing and now, with these three events in December, January, and early March, I’m super-excited. I feel like an NBA player who hoops at the Drew League in the summer.”

Brown has locked in a qualifying grudge race with door-car standout Lyle Barnett.

“There will be so many great Pro Mod racers like Stevie “Fast” Jackson, Erica Enders is going to be a part of it, Melanie Salemi, Lyle Barnett, and so many great drivers. It’s such a cool series with a diverse group of racers who will come to Bradenton to duke it out and I’m very fortunate to be a part of it. I always have fun at the drag strip, but I’m always in it to win it, and that’s our goal. Why go out there if you don’t have a chance to win?”

Enders, a six-time Pro Stock world champion, will mark her return to Pro Modified at the Snowbirds, competing for the first time since 2019 behind the wheel of a ProCharger-powered car out of the Scott Tidwell Racing camp and in partnership with Elite Motorsports.
