Former Marussia chief executive Graeme Lowdon will rejoin Formula 1 after being appointed by General Motors and partners TWG Globalas Team Principal for the Cadillac F1 outfit ahead of entering the series in 2026, GM confirmed on Thursday.
General Motors and partners TWG Global announced Thursday that Graeme Lowdon, a former Marussia chief executive, has been named Team Principal for the Cadillac F1 team, which plans to become the 11th outfit on the Formula 1 grid in 2026.
The experienced British executive is no stranger to the American project, playing a clinical role as an advisor on General Motors (GM) entry for the last two years.
“I’m truly honored to be appointed as the team principal of this exciting new team, and I would like to thank everyone involved for placing their trust in me,” Lowdon stated.
“I believe that Formula 1 is the greatest team sport in the world, and teams are all about people. This is a team with a real love for, and desire to go, racing, and we have the experience and expertise to do just that,” the 59-year-old remarked.
“Racing is at the very heart of everything that we do. This is what I want to see in a team, and I really want to be part of it. I don’t underestimate the task ahead, and I have the utmost respect for the competition. I look forward to the challenge of racing. In the meantime, our work continues at pace.”
Last month, Formula One confirmed the series was moving forward with GM’s application to join the pinnacle of motorsport from 2026, having agreed in principle to support the American squad under the Cadillac brand.
The application was initially filed by Andretti Global in partnership with the giant car manufacturer over a year ago when the FIA officially launched the call for Expression of Interest for prospective new teams looking to participate at a competitive level in the FIA Formula One World Championship.
It met the selection criteria established by the FIA, which then referred it to Formula One Management (FOM) for commercial discussions.
However, the FOM would reject Andretti Cadillac’s proposal to join the F1 grid, leaving on the table a possibility for admission in 2028.
In November 2023, GM officially confirmed its registration with the FIA as a Formula One power unit manufacturer starting in the 2028 season.
Most recently, Michael Andretti, a former IndyCar driver and racing team owner since 2002, decided to step down from his ownership role in Andretti Global.
