GM names Lowdon in charge of Cadillac F1 team · RaceFans

General Motors has named Graeme Lowdon as the team principal of its new Formula 1 operation which has an agreement in principle to enter the series in 2026 under its Cadillac brand.

Lowdon’s prior F1 experience includes a stint at Manor’s F1 team, which collapsed after the 2016 season. He was the sporting director for the team which entered F1 under the name Virgin in 2010.

“I’m truly honoured to be appointed as the team principal of this exciting new team and I would like to thank everyone involved for placing their trust in me,” said the 59-year-old.

“I believe that Formula 1 is the greatest team sport in the world, and teams are all about people. This is a team with a real love for, and desire to go, racing, and we have the experience and expertise to do just that. Racing is at the very heart of everything that we do. This is what I want to see in a team, and I really want to be part of it.”

Cadillac’s entry was approved by Formula One Management last month. F1’s commercial rights holder previously opposed its bid, following its approval by the FIA in October last year.

With little more than a year until they will appear on the grid, Lowdon says they have a lot of work to do. “I don’t underestimate the task ahead and I have the utmost respect for the competition,” he said. “I look forward to the challenge of racing. In the meantime, our work continues at pace.”

Lowdon began work on the project after its was formally announced in January 2023 in response to the FIA’s request for expressions of interest. He has overseen their initial work on their chassis, aerodynamics and simulations. Their efforts so far have been split across four bases: Three in the USA and another at Silverstone in the UK.

General Motors president Mark Reuss said Lowdon “has great racing expertise, he knows how to assemble a high-performing team and he embodies the values the Cadillac Formula 1 Team will represent in all its endeavours, on or off the track.”
