F1 Live: 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix second practice

Valtteri Bottas, Sauber, Yas Marina, 2024

This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.

Second practice for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is coming up next.

The six drivers who sat out the first practice sessions will be back in action for this one: Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz Jnr, Lance Stroll, Alexander Albon and Yuki Tsunoda.

Second practice is go at Yas Marina and we’ve already got most of the drivers out on the track.

Lando Norris puts up an early benchmark with a 1’25.020, three-tenths up on Lewis Hamilton.

Kevin Magnussen, in what is probably the final grand prix weekend of his career, is ninth at the moment. He reports some understeer in his Haas.

George Russell moves up to fifth behind the McLarens and Ferraris.

Jack Doohan, making his grand prix debut this weekend, is at the bottom of the times so far. “Was that too much pressure?” he asks race engineer Josh Peckett. “Was that why I locked the front-right?” He’s told: “Yeah you locked both front and rear there so just being a little bit too ambitious on that braking point.”

It seems Will Joseph and Lando Norris are Friends fans. Here’s how Joseph alerted Norris to Doohan approaching him: “Car behind is ‘how you doin”.”

Lambiase: “Max how is ride please?” Verstappen: “It’s bad. Really bad problem in the car. Front axle is just not working.”

Leclerc is concerned he’s damaged his floor. “I don’t know if I destroyed the plank.” Race engineer Bryan Bozzi tells him to pit.

The track has fallen silent as drivers prepare to do their qualifying simulation runs.

Lando Norris did a 1’24.332 on mediums, Oscar Piastri beats that with a 1’23.751 on softs, but the other McLaren returns to the top of the times with a 1’23.517. Verstappen, meanwhile, only manages seventh.

Carlos Sainz Jnr goes third but is the best part of six tenths of a second slower than Norris. Lewis Hamilton gets within two-hundredths of a second of him – next time out he’ll be in that car…

The pole-winner of the last two races, George Russell, only goes 11th with his first run, a second off Norris.
