The School of Automotive Machinists (SAM Tech) is actively engaged in the mission of educating people who want to learn how to work within the motorsports industry. SAM Tech offers numerous programs that prepare its students to not only build and tune engines but how to create parts from an idea based on a need.
SAM Tech offers programs in engine block machining, cylinder head machining, CNC machining, and EFI tuning. Students have the option to take these classes individually, or as part of a program to earn an Associate degree. The classes are designed to build a student’s knowledge base while providing practical hands-on experience running machines.
Andrew Hachmeister walks us through the process of how the school worked with its students to create an oil pan for an engine build.
“This is a dry sump oil pan that we came up with for LS-based engines. The main girdle is actually incorporated into the dry sump system itself. We worked with the students to come up with a design that cut clearances with the rods and had room for the scrapers on the crank. After we had a design, we 3D printed it, tested it, and then had the students CNC machine the pan out of aluminum.”
This oil pan is an example of how the students make something from start to finish at SAM Tech. Hachmeister also stated that this pan could be used in future builds, or could even be offered up to the public as a product that can be purchased.
