McLaren evacuated its motorhome at the Circuit de Catalunya after a fire broke out around midday on Saturday.
The local fire brigade attended the scene after smoke was seen billowing from the temporary structure which McLaren calls its Team Hub.
A statement issued by the team confirmed those who had been inside were safe. “This morning we evacuated our Team Hub paddock hospitality unit following a fire alert,” it said. “The team has been safely evacuated while the local fire brigade handle the issue.”
The fire did not present McLaren’s drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri from participating in the final practice session which began at 12:30pm local time.
McLaren introduced its Team Hub in 2021 as a replacement for its Brand Centre. The more compact structure requires less than half as many trucks to transport it from track to track and is largely constructed from parts recycled from the team’s previous motorhome.
Another team was affected by fire at the same venue 12 years earlier. Williams, who scored their most recent victory to date at the event in 2012, suffered a fire in their garage while celebrations were taking place afterwards. Seven people were taken to hospital for treatment and another 24 visited the medical centre.
