McLaren’s latest F1 motorhome misfortune no problem for drivers · RaceFans

Damaged McLaren motorhome, Hungaroring, 2024

The latest misfortune to strike McLaren’s motorhome at the Hungarian Grand Prix won’t cause any problems for their drivers this weekend, says Oscar Piastri.

The upper floor of the Team Hub was damaged when a storm hit the Hungaroring while teams were setting up their facilities ahead of this weekend’s race.

The drivers have their own private facilities within the suite. With hot conditions forecast for this weekend’s race, Piastri said the most important thing is their downstairs rooms were not affected.

“We have two smaller rooms,” he said. “So the downstairs one – most importantly the one with the air conditioning – is good. So for this weekend, we’re sweet.

“The upstairs one, I can’t use those. But I have one, so I’ll be fine.”

It is the second time in four race weekends McLaren have suffered some misfortune with their hospitality suite. The team had to evacuate its facilities during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend when a fire broke out shortly before the final practice session on Saturday.

With parts of the Team Hub out of action, McLaren had to rearrange the available rooms and borrow spaces offered by rival teams and the Circuit de Catalunya. Piastri said they’ve done the same again this weekend.

“It doesn’t change much,” he said. “We’ve, unfortunately, got the experience of having to rearrange things a little bit. So we’ll be fine for the weekend.

“I don’t know if this motorhome we’ve got is now a bad omen and just, I don’t know if it’s a sign that we need a new one or what, but we’ll be fine.”

“The last time – our motorhome caught fire last time – I think Lando put it on pole, so I don’t know, maybe it’s good!” he joked.

Following the damage sustained in Spain, McLaren used a temporary replacement at the Austrian Grand Prix. It brought the repaired Team Hub back for the last round at Silverstone.
