Piastri reveals he won Hungarian Grand Prix with fractured rib · RaceFans

Oscar Piastri, McLaren, Hungaroring, 2024

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has revealed that he has been recovering from a fractured rib for at least the last month.

Piastri shared a post on his Instagram account to celebrate the summer break, disclosing that he has been dealing with an injury for several weeks.

Along with a selection of images from the opening phase of the season, Piastri captioned his post: “First part of the season done. First GP victory. First broken bone. Rib’s enjoying the break.”

The McLaren driver shared an image from what appears to be an ultrasound scan which shows he has suffered a fracture to his sixth rib. The date on the ultrasound reads ‘July 8th 2024’, suggesting it was taken on the Monday following the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

While Piastri offered no further detail on how he sustained the injury, the timing of his ultrasound indicates that he was still recovering from the fracture when he claimed victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix, which took place two weeks after the round at Silverstone. The McLaren driver took the lead of the race at the Hungaroring from team mate Lando Norris at the start and was allowed back into the lead by Norris under team orders after McLaren gave Norris an advantageous early pit stop in the final pit cycle which cost Piastri the lead.

Piastri became the eighth-youngest grand prix winner in history by claiming victory at the age of 23 years and three months. He has finished on the podium four times this season to sit in fourth place in the drivers’ championship at the summer break.

Fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo was forced to miss several rounds of last year’s season after the RB driver broke a bone in his hand after a crash in practice for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. He was replaced by reserve driver Liam Lawson for five rounds before returning to the cockpit for the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas.
