Sergio Perez targets Canada points after letting Red Bull down

Sergio Perez said he let Red Bull down by crashing out of Q2, so is now determined to recover to a points-paying position in Canada.

Cold and wet conditions greeted the drivers in Montreal for FP3, the rain then lingering as it continued to fall in the opening stages of qualifying.

But once it cleared away the Formula 1 cars did their usual impressive job of clearing most of the standing water on the racing line, allowing for some intermediate-tyre action in Q2.

It was in this session though where Perez bowed out, the Mexican racer giving the Techpro a hefty whack as he slid off between turns three and four. He did find reverse gear, but the RB18 was too wedged in there to continue any further.

It means that Perez will start the race from P13, but with dry conditions expected to return, he is determined to undo some of the damage and bring a strong haul of points back to Red Bull as his team-mate Max Verstappen leads the pack away.

“A mistake from my side, so I’m very sorry for my team,” Perez told Sky Sports F1 after qualifying.

“I let them down today unfortunately, but I’ve got to be thinking already for tomorrow and hopefully I’m able to recover and get into strong points.

“Tomorrow I will try to minimise the damage and just attack from lap one onwards and see where we end up.”

Perez was then asked if any issue with the brakes had led to his off?

No mechanical problem per say, but he did suspect that they were a little cold, explaining that he had locked-up on the lap before and flat-spotted the tyres.

“I was struggling with the brakes, I think they were on the cold side, I had a lock-up into Turn 10 the lap before, I flat spot them,” said Perez.

“And yeah that probably meant that I was a bit out of shape into Turn 3, became just a passenger as soon as I touched the brake it was a bit too much.”

Perez is not the only traditional frontrunner with some overtaking work to do on Sunday.

While he starts P13, further back will be Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, the Monegasque driver having dropped to the back of the pack after taking a new Ferrari power unit.

AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda met the same punishment, so a Q1 battle between the pair to avoid propping up the grid was won by Leclerc, so he starts P19.

From there Leclerc has his eyes on finishing in the top four.
