Spanish driver Carlos Sainz Jr. and Scuderia Ferrari have agreed on a multi-year contract extension valid through to the end of 2024, the team from Maranello confirmed Thursday.
The Prancing Horse squad, which will race on home soil this weekend in Imola, is enjoying a dream start to the 2022 season, leading the constructors and driver’s championships with a young and talented pairing formed by Monegasque Charles Leclerc and Spaniard Carlos Sainz.
Leclerc opened the season, taking victory for Ferrari at the Bahrain GP, and most recently, just two weeks ago, he emerged victorious again at the Australian GP.
The pairing has been taking the best out of the F1-75; Sainz claimed the second place in Bahrain and a third place in the following race held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
“I am delighted to have renewed my contract with Scuderia Ferrari. I have always said that there is no better Formula 1 team to race for, and after over a year with them, I can confirm that all my expectations have been exceeded,” Sainz outlined.
The 27-year-old, born in Madrid, joined the iconic Italian team ahead of the 2021 season, in which he went on to showcase his potential, finishing fifth in the driver’s overall standings, also a personal best career end to a season since he entered the pinnacle of motorsport in 2015 at Toro Rosso.
Moreover, Sainz’s consistency across the season led him to score valuable points for the team in all but two (Portugal and France GP) of the 22 races featured in the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar.
The highlights of his debut year as a Ferrari driver came at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, finishing the famous race in second place.
Additional accomplishments took place in Hungary, Russia, and Abu Dhabi, where he stepped into the podium after crossing the finish line in third place on each occasion.
