Nicholas Latifi brushes off Williams exit rumours after poor start to the F1 season

Nicholas Latifi has acknowledged his results have to improve this season, but remains “convinced” he can match Alex Albon at Williams.

Questions around the Canadian’s future with the team have begun to be asked after a poor start to 2022 that has seen him spin on multiple occasions, as well as having generally played second fiddle to his team-mate in terms of outright pace so far this year.

But while the 26-year-old admitted he needs to turn things around from his perspective, any rumours surrounding his departure should be ignored.

“You shouldn’t pay attention to everything that is written about me,” Latifi stated in an interview with Le Journal de Montreal. “And I’m not the only one to be treated the same way. But I realise my results are not satisfactory. I have to do more.”

P16 is as high as Latifi has managed to finish so far in 2022, while Albon impressed in Australia in particular – running almost an entire race distance on one set of tyres to bring home Williams’ first point of the season.

The Canadian insists he will still be able to match the Thai-British driver – whom he also partnered in their Formula 2 days – but added he will only be able to do so once he fully backs himself.

“It’s a question of confidence,” he said. “I’m convinced I can drive as fast as Alex, who had a shorter learning curve with the new car.”

Ralf Schumacher suggested Alpine junior and reserve driver Oscar Piastri would be the “perfect choice” to partner Albon at Williams if Latifi does not improve, but team boss Jost Capito gave full backing to his current driver despite his current circumstances.

“I think it’s a heads game, isn’t it? He’s capable to drive very fast and do the same lap times as Alex if he is in the right place, I’m sure,” Capito recently told reporters.
